Shawna Lee, born South Korea 1959, is an American artist.
A graduate of the art school at UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles),
Shawna studied with conceptual artists Alexis Smith, Vito Acconci, Chris Burden among others.
She experimented with performance and textural site-specific paintings while fronting a rock and pop bands in Los Angeles and Taiwan as a singer songwriter.
It was her years in a French Pyrenees countryside that Shawna re-embraced her first two loves: drawing and writing. She has been drawing ever since.
In the Yellow Fever Series, Shawna recounts her stories with many small drawings sewn together with a nod to patchwork.
These stories could be of the murmur of the poignant insecurity, the whispers of self-confession or oblivious banter of the self-absorbed.
Through their monologues, one hears the raw noises of vulnerability and its tension along with its yearnings,
sometimes even to the point of "grotesque" inviting the reader/viewer as a "privileged" voyeur.
